Official Moab 2010 Trip Planner

Official Moab 2010 Trip Planner

Postby JasonC on Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:15 am

For those of you interested in a trip to Moab next year please post questions or comments here. The official date has been set for May 7-16, 2010. Our crew will be heading out Friday afternoon the 7th. We are taking the low route this time as it is quite a bit less hilly and hardly no chance of snowstorm. This route is approximately 1.5 hrs longer, but worth the torture of not sitting in Colorado snow (although, Russ's "Larry the Cable Guy" channel 19 conversations were quite humorous while we waited.) The first day travel (leaving at noon) will be about a 8-9 hour drive and we'll stay the night somewhere around Conway, AR. The next day will be the long day at 14-15 hours to Gallup, NM. We will be getting up early and heading out so we'll have time for fuel/food along the way. The final day of driving will be to Moab. This last stretch will be 4-5 hours arriving in Moab around noon on Sunday, to be rewarded by a half day of wheeling after unpacking. We currently have 2 confirmed tow rigs on this route (with 4 vehicles in tow) and possible a vehicle driving along. Anyone is welcome to follow or lead.

Here are some suggestions for our outings once we get there:

Sunday-Hell's Revenge (lets find "The Escalator" this time)
Monday-Pritchet Canyon,Behind the Rocks, White Knuckle
Tuesday-?
Wednesday-Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Spike, Jason's Crack?, Rusty Nail
Thursday-?
Friday-shorty ride or buffer day to catch up if I or any other unlucky soul renders a part useless

Reasons to go:

1. The trip of your wheeling life
2. Good friends enjoying each others company/comments
3. A good STEAK dinner provided by Rock Your 4x4
4. Memories that last a lifetime
5. No stress, no work, no bugs, just rock and sand

Based on the initial email that went out, the listing of anniversaries and the preference to not be gone during those....... Mine and Ashlea's is May 10. #-o This conflict is unfortunate for me. However, I'm sure it will serve as excellent cannon fodder for everyone else and thus promptly be added to my ever growing "excuse list."

This is no conflict at all. I would understand if this were a 1 yr, 25 yr, or even 50 yr anniversary. Ashlea loves you and wouldn't mind to celebrate a few days early. In fact, I'll call her today and make sure that's ok so you won't be able to use this excuse! Boo-yah! [-X

Well.... simply put,
1. My mother in law is great and I love her but..... not gonna happen.
2. Ashlea wouldn't want to sit around all week in Moab while I'm out cavorting in the Jeep.
3. Neither myself nor Ashlea has enough faith in either my vehicle's safety or my driving ability to put Reid in it just yet.
4. There is no way Reid would sit through a car ride of this magnitude...no, I'm not flying them out there either.

If I go, it'll just be me and somebody or something to keep me awake while I drive.

Yep, I have few that would like to go....but definitely Kevin. It's all up in the air for us. If it works out, great. If not, hopefully there is a next time down the road.

i'll go ahead and put myself and toad on the list. we will be sporting a white tow rig with a brownish/gray/green wrangler in tow. We will be taking the northern route again. planning to stop the first night just inside the Colorado line and driving on in the next afternoon. Our departure time will be morning time Friday the 7th.

Here's our group:

Me
Lindsey
Mason
Audrey
Charlie (my dad)
Joyce (my step mom)
Brandon

The guys will be travelling in a Dodge 2500 diesel (that happens to have some new go fast parts)towing Climrox and the red XJ (assuming we can locate a 28-30' gooseneck trailer to put both on). We'll be following the Cooper's on whatever route they're taking. Girls are flying.

You need to ride in it and see if you feel the same. It will spin the tires in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th. It will put you in the seat!

Jason & I (and whoever goes w/ us) will be leaving around 1:00 p.m. Friday 5/7/10 and driving about as far as Conway, Arkansas for the nite. I know it's a little longer (~100 miles) to go I-40, but it's an easier pull w/ fewer big cities and mountains to go thru. Most likely, we'll spend Saturday nite in Gallup, NM and drive the rest of the way Sunday a.m. Last time, this was our route and put us in Moab around 2:00 p.m. We're pulling his new JK Unlimited and my TJ, neither of which as been there before. Scott, you guys can tag along w/ whoever you want to, but the "white tow rig" only goes one speed......hammer downish.

now that's funny, i don't care who you are. the (white tow rig) will have a few extra pounds behind it this time tho....not that that should be a problem, but we are planning on making the trip in two days this time instead of one.

even tho i haven't made a trip completely out west on 40, the jaunts i have made were much rougher rides than 70 was. just my .02

You got a trailer to go behind it? You can get military surplus trailers pretty cheap.

I sure would like to make this trip but it probally just is not goign to happen for me. As far
as the trip I will offer some advice.

1- Take I-70 it's smoother their is nothing to see once you pass the Miss River until you get to the Rockies.
I-40 is rough as crap and Oklahoma needs revenue.

2- If you make it Ft. Reily, KS plan on calling it quits for the day.

3- Stop at every service station past Salina, KS. Or don't get below 1/3 tank. It can be up to 100 plus miles
between stops in western KS. If your in a headwind expect your fuel milage to go to crap. Not a good
place to run out of fuel.

4- You better add the GVWR sticker on the truck and your trailer. If it's over 26,000 you better have a CDL

That means you 12000 GVWR Dually and your 14 GVWR trailer will get you shut down if your over 100 miles
from home.

5- Make sure your break-away hitches and chain are in proper condition.

6- 2 spare trailer tires, you will probally blow the second one if your loaded when the first goes at hwy speed

Other than that hammer down and have a blast, just trying to maybe save you some headache, I have just about been in all of the above.

I appreciate Randy's 2 cents, but we've been both ways....uh, I-40 & I-70 I mean....and my 2 cents is just the opposite. For what it's worth, the 10-day weather forecast for Moab is beautiful until Monday (5/10) and Tuesday (5/11) when there's a 60% "chance" of rain"... :( I know, the weather guessers are just as likely to hit the forecast accurately as, say, I am. That's not saying much for them, either. Whatever, I'm going to pack some rain gear anyway. Also the temperatures are predicted to be around 50+/- at night and 70-80 during the day. D-day will be here before we know it; lots of loose ends to get done, too. :?
